Hillsdale is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 8,233. It is the county seat of Hillsdale County6, and is run as a council-manager government. On November 8, 2005, 18-year-old high school student Michael Sessions was elected mayor as a write-in candidate, defeating the 51-year old incumbent and becoming the youngest mayor in the U.S., although the "U.S. Conference of Mayors lacks the data to determine whether he'll be the youngest mayor ever" (as per USA Today, 10 November 2005, page 5A).
The city is situated mostly within Hillsdale Township, but is politically independent.
It is also the home of Hillsdale College.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 14.4 km2 (5.6 mi2). 13.8 km2 (5.3 mi2) of it is land and 0.6 km2 (0.2 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 4.32% water.
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 8,233 people, 3,067 households, and 1,781 families residing in the city. The population density is 597.5/km2 (1,548.2/mi2). There are 3,274 housing units at an average density of 237.6/km2 (615.7/mi2). The racial makeup of the city is 96.53% White, 0.60% African American, 0.50% Native American, 0.83% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.49% from other races, and 1.06% from two or more races. 1.53% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,067 households out of which 30.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.5% are married couples living together, 12.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.9% are non-families. 34.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 3.01.
In the city the population is spread out with 22.5% under the age of 18, 21.3% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 17.4% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 87.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $34,695, and the median income for a family is $42,649. Males have a median income of $32,573 versus $22,707 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,062. 10.3% of the population and 5.5% of families are below the poverty line. 10.1% of those under the age of 18 and 15.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
